PSH #540i Cone 6 Black Ceramic Clay Body, 10 kg
540i is a unique, multi-purpose, brown-black cone 6 clay pigmented with non-toxic iron oxide.
While it is one of PSH’s best selling stonewares, it is important for new users to be aware that it is more reactive and outgases more than other clays that they produce and, as a result, might cause defects such as orange peel surfaces, fine bubble clouding or cratering in some glazes.
To achieve the darkest colour possible, 540i is formulated to be highly vitreous, making it more susceptible to bloating when overfired than other, less glassy stonewares. 540i can be fired lower, to cone 5, and remain a fully functional tableware body but with less depth of colour.
540i is not recommended for microwave ware due to excessive heating.
Proudly Manufacturered in Canada by Pottery Supply House.
Available exclusively in 10 kg (22 lb) size.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS:
Firing range: Cone 5 – 6
Avg. Dry Shrinkage: 6.3%
Avg. Absorption at Cone 06: 12.4%
Avg. Absorption at Cone 04: 8.4%
Total Avg. Shrinkage at Cone 6: 11.5%
Avg. Absorption at Cone 6: <0.5%
*CoE at Cone 6: 8.55
*CoE: coefficient of expansion information supplied is based on the crazing behaviour of 10 quality control glazes fired to cone 06, cone 6 or cone 10 having coe's ranging from 6.29 x 10^-6/°C to 8.87 x 10^-6/°C as determined by Insight glaze calculation software. Fully fused glazes having a lower coe (as determined by Insight) than the value indicated are not expected to craze. While this information is useful in assessing glaze suitability, it is not definitive; actual testing under user firing conditions is strongly advised.
Storage: Protect ceramic clay bodies from direct sunlight, avoiding excessive temperature changes and protect from frost.
Use: Technical details are available with information on the characteristics of each product and its use. It is recommended to test clay body prior to large scale use in order to verify suitability in both the ceramic process (shaping, drying, firing and decoration) and the final application that is expected to be obtained.
